Major League Baseball

More so than any other year, reply in Major League Baseball has become a huge issue. The most notable instance has been when Jim Joyce earlier in the year blew a call that cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game. While Joyce apologized for the call, many argued that it showed the need for instant replay in baseball.

The human element has been a major part of baseball since its beginnings. The umpire has the ultimate say about how the plays are called and for better or worse, they usually get the plays right. However, a recent study by ESPN’s Outside the Lines has stated that Umpires get 1 in 5 close calls wrong. Balls and strikes were not included in this call and neither were calls that were blatantly obvious.

Many would say that missing 1 in 5 close calls is too many, including former major leaguer and Senator Jim Bunning. However, when compared to the sheer number of calls that umpires make a game, this is really not that many. The number of missed calls would not equal to 1% of overall calls made over the season. The odds of umpires missing a call is much better than winning with the worst starting hand in poker on real money internet poker sites. Is this really enough to warrant replay?

Tommy Lasorda, former L.A Dodger manager, would argue no. He thinks that the game should be kept the way it is with umpires making the calls. Just like free no download poker, he thinks the game should be kept pure. Tony Gwynn and former Orioles manager Earl Weaver would argue that you need to get the calls rights and as such, you need to have replay. Former Hall of Fame umpire Doug Harvey says that if you take the umpires out of the game you might as well play baseball with robots. Those that side with Harvey’s views are also the type that probably think that mac compatible poker sites are inferior to normal pc sites.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Should baseball use replay or should it be reserved for major calls, such as calls that can determine the outcome of a game or even playoff games? One thing is certain and that is that this issue is one that will not be going away anytime soon.
