Beating small stakes no limit games

In my experience of playing small stakes full ring no limit ring games then the average player base roughly makes two glaring errors. These errors are that they give away their hand strength too quickly and they also give up with marginal hands too easily after the flop. Let us look at these two errors in more detail. In no limit hold’em then there is obviously four rounds of betting which is one before the flop and three after the flop. This means that the pot grows geometrically as the hand progresses. It also means that the vast majority of the money usually goes into the pot in the later rounds.

This also highlights that it is not a good idea to give away your hand strength early in the hand as this can have dire consequences later on down the streets. Let us take a typical player in NL50 full ring who raises in early position. They only do this with AA-JJ and AK. They limp KQs and AQ and also lower pairs TT and under. So if this player raises pre-flop from early position then we know that they have one of five possible hands. In deep stacked situations then this is not a good spot to be in. It is so bad that you could even know that your opponent has aces and it may still be profitable to call with something like a small pocket pair or even suited connector type hands if two criteria are met.

These are that the stacks are deep and the opponent is weak enough to give you implied odds. But once again the underlying theme here is in giving your hand away. The second big error that novice and intermediate players make is that they allow themselves to get moved off hands too easily post flop. Let us say that you open raise from the hijack with the Jc-10c and the aggressive button player cold calls you. The flop comes Q-J-2 rainbow and you bet your pair of jacks and the button calls you. The turn comes and you check the 4d arriving and your opponent makes a near pot sized bet.

You call because your play induced a bluff and the Kh appears on the river. You check again and your opponent shoves all in for almost the pot. You have a tough call to make and you cannot make it and so you fold. The end result is that the LAG takes the pot. An even more extreme example is if you raise with A-Q and your opponent calls you. The flop comes Ad-10c-9c and you c-bet two thirds of the pot and get called. The turn card is the 4c and you bet again and your opponent makes a big raise. You see three clubs on board and only one pair in your hand and fold. Each time your opponent was bluffing and they merely floated you on the flop with the intention of taking the pot away from you. Try to be mindful of the fact that you are giving away the strength of your hand and also that you may be playing too timidly post flop.
