When I first started my Holdem poker career then tracking software wasn’t even available. I first played online in 2000 or so and started playing seriously in around 2002. So it was probably difficult for me to really take on board just how important using tracking software really was and how the online game was about to dramatically change. At the end of the day poker is played electronically when played in an online environment and this lends itself to software aids being developed. This happened in areas like financial trading some years ago. These days most institutional traders use software and automated trading and all of the advantages that come with it. Firstly one reason to use the software is that it is easy through the hand replayer to see all of the hands that have been played in your games. This has numerous different advantages but one that is rarely mentioned is that it allows you to check for collusion and other forms of cheating. This is more rife than what you think and unfortunately the ease at which you can cheat online and the toughening nature of the games means that more and more players are resorting to cheating. Some people argue that cheats are normally losing poker players anyway and cheating still does not compensate for their poor poker skill. However cheats are like poker players, some are very good and some are not so good. The problem comes when you have people cheating who are also very good players. Why would a very good player resort to cheating you may ask? Well there are numerous reasons but if they are no longer able to beat their game playing their usual style then many resort to it and there have been some famous big name cases recently to back this up. Even if it is just a case of multi accounting to conceal your identity and leaving the other account dormant then this is still against the terms and conditions of nearly all poker sites. However when it comes to collusion then software like PokerTracker helps you to find this form of cheating because believe me when I say that the poker sites themselves cannot cover all of the action all of the time. It is in their interests to keep the games as clean as possible but they depend more on their own players policing the games than they would care to let on. How rife is cheating online? Well I think it is more widespread than people realise simply because it is easier to do in many aspects or at least easier to attempt.
